Florida Stuff
One more day here in Florida. Some observations:
-We are staying with friends in the Tampa area, where of course the Super Bowl was held last night. I had mentioned to people that I was going to try to "crash" the game, but we ended up watching it on television - the thought of even trying to get near the stadium, with the traffic and everything, forget it.
-Tampa is considered the lightning capital of the US and the name itself, though there is some debate, has something to do with lightning strikes and sticks of fire associated with the stuff. It is one area of Florida that does not seem to be bothered by hurricanes.
-Like Orlando, where we spent a few days, the main roads are huge - four lanes on each side! When making a left I always feel like I am driving into the oncoming lane because the turning arc is so wide.

Monkeys Typing
In conversation tonight I said something along the lines of "an army of monkeys pounding away at typewriters over time would randomly type out Shakespeare's works" or something like that. Prez wasn't buying it, and I confess it sounds pretty dubious but it is interesting. I have come across the idea in a few places recently, and now I have learned it has a title: the Infinite Monkey Theorem which, by the way, would make an excellent band name.

Latest Stuff
As always it has been a busy week with tons of things going on. Here is the latest:
-First off, happy birthday to the best guy ever, my father. He is currently preparing for his upcoming trip to Greece. It will be his first time in the old country in 20 years, and I am sure he will find it has changed considerably. He will be spending much time with our beloved family there, and will be sending me email updates, which I hope to post. Dad will also be doing some of his own genealogical research - he plans to go to Pyrgos, from whence came my yiayia's family, and Vamvakou, the mountain area from where my papou hailed.
-We had a huge turnout, almost like a regular Sunday, on Friday for the feast of the Dormition. I had C-Fahl count how many people I communed - 81. I imagine Fr. Dean communed a similar amount. Not bad for a weekday liturgy! It is truly a joy when our Cathedral celebrates these special days together.

Understanding Cholesterol
Prez gave me this brief article from Pharmacy Times. It is actually the text for a handout that I imagine they stock at the store and give out to customers. It explains the confusing good/bad cholesterol issue and outlines ways to get levels where they need to be. This is an issue that affects in some way most of us and is worth the several minutes it takes to read the write-up. Good stuff.

Random Stuff
-Fr. Peter and I will be meeting early tomorrow to record another Facing East podcast. It will likely be up on the internet and iTunes later tomorrow.
-Last week Holy Trinity had its annual donor appreciation cocktail party. There was a brief presentation to honor room donors, and at one point a speaker used the words "hospice" and "auspices" in the same sentence - very cool : )
-I have a book of short stories by Ray Bradbury entitled A Sound of Thunder. The book was originally published as The Golden Apples Of The Sun but it has been renamed after the famous story. There is a cool feature on the cover; instead of Ray Bradbury, it reads like this: BRADBURY.

Monday Night/Early Tuesday
Sigh...after last night's devastating loss I put myself on a strict newspaper/sports website moratorium. Wouldn't you know - I gave in this evening and checked out a popular sports page online, and my laptop became infected with the dreaded SpyDefender Pro virus. I seem to have successfully removed it - serves me right. Other random thoughts:
-Gisele, please - this is football. Do not sip wine while watching the game from a luxury box. This killed me - every time the camera showed her I shuddered - it was a very bad omen.
-Congratulations to Little Angel mother Sarah K - her Kids' Expo on Saturday was a huge and well-deserved success. Sarah's work continually enriches us through events like the Expo as well as her awesome website.

Gift Shop Rampage!
I am not normally much for gift shops or shopping in general, but I went kind of crazy during the previously mentioned museum trip when we ended the day in the gift shop. I was mindlessly rummaging through the various doodads, shirts, magnets and other stuff most places like that all seem to have when some small books caught my eye. They were from a series called Dover Fine Art Stickers. Each book has four pages of four stickers each. The stickers are...let's see...2.5" by 1.75" and are for sticking on envelopes, correspondence, whatever, and they have the artist's last name and the name of the painting on it. They are inexpensive and I bought one each for Hopper, De Chirico (who was born in Greece -didn't know that), and Gauguin.
