Set List
I jammed with Brian the other night in his newly upgraded "Man Cave". Part of the upgrade is the presence of a computer and projector, so we could project chord charts and lyrics on the wall as we played (as opposed to the painstaking process of writing chords out on the whiteboard in my office when we play there). Anyways, here is our set list, as best as I can remember:
-Hey Joe
-Here Comes The Sun and Oh! Darling from Abbey Road - our first time playing these Beatles tunes.
-How Many More Times
-Mr. Crowley
-Voodoo Child
-The Wind Cries Mary. We referenced an old SNL skit by occasionally singing "The Wind Cries Shasta".
-Hallelujah
-Queen Jane Approximately - A great Dylan tune. We talked about how his vocal phrasing is all over the place, which makes it a bit harder to sing, even though it is a Dylan tune.
-Knocking On Heaven's Door.

Latest Tunes
Here is the music that is currently on heavy rotation in my universe:
-The new Weezer song - If You're Wondering...(long title)
-Band Of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You
-Vivian Girls - Second Date and Surfin' Away
-Phoeniz - Lisztomania
-The Clientele - latest (and last?) album.
-Gomez - See The World
-Tori Amos - Jeanette, Isabella and Our New Year. I realize these are Christmas and New Year's tunes but I am just happy to have good music for the first time from Tori since the Beekeeper era.
-Theme from "A Summer Place" by Percy Faith and His Orchestra. I hum the melody to this when trying to get Raphaela to go to sleep.
-I Had A Dream by John Sebastian and Everyone's Gone To The Moon by Jonathan King, same story as above - these big pop melodies with lush orchestration seem to be Raphaela's bag.

Set List
We jammed in my office last Wednesday night. Here is the set list. As always, most of these songs were 15-20 minutes long, with much improvisation. It was a nice way to release some stress from the previous two weeks.
-warmup I/IV jam in B
-Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen
-jam in A
-Hey Joe
-The Wind Cries Mary
-Indian music style jam based around G#
-Heart Attack & Vine by Tom Waits
-Lenny
-Sympathy
It had been a while since we all played together, so we relied on some old standbys. I think this was the first time we played The Wind Cries Mary. I kept referring to it as "The Wind Cries Shasta" from an old SNL skit.

Playlist
Here is what is on heavy rotation these days in the car and in the iPod:
-Go Down Emmanuel Road by Dan Zanes and the Sandy Girls
-Keep It Hid by Dan Auerbach. This is the new album from one of the guys from the Black Keys.
-My Maudlin Career by Camera Obscura
-Girls Like Mystery - The Cribs
-Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear
-Sgt Pepper. I have found that the running time - 40 minutes or so - makes it perfect listening while on a walk.
-Ten Year Gone by Led Zeppelin

Honest Jon's
We had a "false alarm" Friday, so for those of you waiting for baby news, stay tuned :). In the meantime, Honest Jon's is a record label that I am currently wild about. They have plenty of great new stuff, but they also do things like hunt down obscure 78s from the Belgian Congo, de-hiss and de-click them and put them on CD with great packaging and liner notes. The Give Me Love compilation that you see on the link has songs from Baghdad in the late 20s. The liner notes feature Yeheskel Kojaman, who was among the almost exclusively Jewish musicians on these recordings.

RIP
The sad saga of the life of Michael Jackson came to a sad end the other day. I hope he now finds the peace he never had in life. Some thoughts...
-Am I the only person not surprised by his demise? He was obviously frail and in poor health. He also was surrounded by people who clearly did not have his best interests in mind. He had long ago reached what sportswriter Bill Simmons calls the Mike Tyson Zone - that is, the point where a celebrity's behavior is so outrageous that you will not be surprised by anything that happens.
-I am disgusted by how the media has handled this. Michael has been the butt of jokes for something like 20 years and all of a sudden there are serious articles and features about how important he was and what he meant to everyone. I suspect that many of the fans who have been shown crying at impromptu memorials have made their share of jokes at his expense as well over the years.

Been A While/Beatles Rock Band
I know, I have slacked off on blogging. I am back. This is just a quick post since I am off to bed - I have been getting up at 4:45 am for adventure boot camp and thus going to bed earlier. I leave you with something fun - the trailer for the new Beatles game in the Rock Band video series - it is awesome. I have always stayed away from video games because they are addictive and, I feel, a waste of time - give me a good book anyday - but since this involves the Beatles I may have to reconsider. Check out the trailer.

Laura Nyro Playlist
I just made a great mix of Laura Nyro tunes. Covers of her songs by the Fifth Dimension, Three Dog Night, BS&T, Streisand and others are more famous than her originals but they are fantastic - pounding piano, gospel backing, great vocals. What I especially like are the covers she did of Jimmy Mack and other tunes with the group Labelle.
Here is the playlist: Jimmy Mack, It's Gonna Take A Miracle, Up On The Roof, Eli's Comin', Stoned Soul Picnic, Flim Flam Man, Stoney End, And When I Die, Save The Country, Mr. Blue, Wedding Bell Blues, I Never Meant To Hurt You.

Set List 2/28/09
Brian, Dave and I jammed on Saturday night. Here is the set list:
-Me And Julio Down By The School Yard - Paul Simon
-Whiskey River - Willie Nelson
-Hurt - the Johnny Cash/Sad Kermit version
-Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
-Sympathy - Stones
-Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen
-License To Kill by Bob Dylan from the early 80s. Who listens to early 80s Dylan? Well, I guess my friends do.
-Red House by Jimi. I kept messing this one up.
-Blue Suede Shoes - we did a slower, psychedelicized version.
-Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream.
We also did a few "originals" - really just random playing.

Music Stuff
It has been a while since I posted about what music was on heavy rotation around here:
-Little Man by Tomer Yosef
-A Deeper Shade Of Soul by Ray Barretto
-Two Magpies by The Fireman (The Fireman is Paul McCartney and Youth)
-Human by The Killers
-Make Me Your Baby by Barbara Lewis
-He Doesn't Know Why by Fleet Foxes
-Kiraly Siratas by A Hawk And A Hacksaw
-Bullet Train To Osaka - Smashing Pumpkins
-California (All The Way) - Luna
-You Got The Silver - Rolling Stones. We watched Shine A Light recently - a concert film of the group shot last year - and they did a great version of this Keith song. This was Brian's last musical contribution to the group - he played autoharp on it. He is also credited with "Moroccan Drums" on Midnight Rambler from the same album but this is either a joke at his expense or his track was mixed out because the percussion is inaudible on the issued recording.
