Lost Pomegranate Marinade

This is a bonus to the previous recipe. The title comes from the fact that we were trying to figure out what the pomegranate stuff was called and looked high and low for the bottle - thinking we had put it back in the fridge but finding it nowhere. It did finally turn up in the spice cabinet, where I had mistakenly put it in a frenzy of kitchen cleaning. Anyways, on to the recipe - this is a marinade that goes great on grilled, not baked, pork chops. Make sure to apply it near the end...

Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Prez and I put this together the other day and it turned out to be pretty tasty:
In a small saucepot combine:
1 cup catsup (sorry, this is how I learned to spell it)
1/3 cup white vinegar and cooking sherry mixed together (do not allow yourself to get bricked in the basement while pouring the sherry)
3 T molasses
2 t Worcestershire sauce (Prez notes that Worcestershire should be pronounced with...

Potato Salad

I just had an emergency request for my mother's potato salad recipe. I called up mom and she said she didn't have a recipe written down but she went over it with me on the phone. There are no real amounts - this is a "judgment recipe". It will make a nice side for a 4th of July barbecue.
Cut up and boil potatoes (you probably want to use 5lbs if it is for a lot of people). When the spuds are ready add chopped onions and celery (you can also add chopped carrots and real bacon...

The Tunguska Event

Today is the 100th anniversary of the Tunguska event. UFO people and other conspiracy theorists have a lot of fun making claims about what happened, but the truth, as far as can be figured out, is of itself fascinating enough that there is no need to look to wild and outlandish explanations.

History Everywhere

Those two words apply to the two commonwealths in which I have spent most of my life - Massachusetts and Virginia. I was thinking of this yesterday while driving back from a Sts. Peter and Paul feast day barbecue in West Brookfield, Ma. I was on Rt. 9 coming back to Worcester for about 17 miles. What little there is to most of the towns I passed through is sparsely clustered (is that an oxymoron?) around Rt. 9 and I saw tons of interesting things. I will select just one to blog about,...

Movie Review And Philokalia

This is an interesting and unusual post reviewing the new Hulk movie through the perspective of the Philokalia.
Sermon Notes

I occasionally throw in some oddball references in my sermons, so I thought I would provide some background on a few things from the past couple of months.
- I compared John the Baptist's prison with the Rancor Pit on Sunday.
- Some weeks ago I used Enoch Powell and...

Music And Other Stuff

I have not been blogging much lately largely because for the past two weeks I have been going to bed at around 9 and waking up at 4:45 am. I am generally a night owl with a 1am or so bedtime, so this has been a shock to my system (why have I been getting up so early? Details to follow). Needless to say this schedule precludes my usual late night blogging as well as my usual daily dose of reading various blogs, news sites and opinion sites. So, in a departure, here is an afternoon post...

No, I'm Not From Skopelos...But Thanks For Asking

What on earth am I talking about? Let's begin at the beginning. My uncle in Pensacola recently celebrated a birthday (Mazel Tov Uncle Pete!) by going to a restaurant called Skopelos On The Bay with his family. When my dad told me this I flashed back to about ten years ago when my aunt told me that most of the people at the Pensacola church were blond and blue-eyed because they were from an island -...

New Facing East Podcasts

Episodes 22 and 23 in the Facing East series are now up here. Both of these were recorded on location - the first at the Alexander The Great Cultural Center golf tournament and the second from the abandoned town center of a genuine ghost town: Dana, Massachusetts. Give them a listen and let us know what you think. The...
